Box jumps are usually programmed for power, coordination, and athleticism, but research suggests plyometric jump training can also contribute to muscle growth. That does not make explosive jumps a complete replacement for resistance training.
A 2022 systematic review and multilevel meta-analysis included 15 controlled studies. Across the pooled evidence, plyometric jump training produced a small to moderate effect on measures of skeletal muscle hypertrophy (Arntz et al., 2022).
Box jumps can contribute to growth, but their first job is still producing force quickly and landing well.
What the review found
The overall standardized mean difference was 0.47, which the authors described as a small to moderate hypertrophy effect. The evidence showed a clearer result for the knee extensors and an uncertain result for the plantar flexors (Arntz et al., 2022).
Effects appeared larger in non-athletes than athletes, although both groups showed changes. Most included programs used two or three jump-training sessions per week.
The studies did not all use box jumps, and they measured muscle size in different ways. The conclusion applies to plyometric jump training as a category, not to one exact box height or viral workout.
Why jumping can stimulate muscle
Plyometric movements use a rapid stretch-shortening cycle, where an eccentric action is followed quickly by a concentric action. The muscles and tendons manage high forces in a short time.
Repeated exposure can produce muscular and neural adaptations, especially in people who are not already highly trained. The stimulus is real, but the practical loading options are less precise than adding weight or repetitions to a traditional lift.
That is one reason resistance training remains easier to scale for a primary hypertrophy goal. Current activity guidance also treats muscle-strengthening work as a distinct weekly need, recommending it on at least two days for adults (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2023).
More height is not more growth
A taller box often encourages higher knee tucking rather than greater takeoff force. It can also increase the consequence of a missed landing without creating a more useful muscular stimulus.
Choose a height that lets both feet land fully on the surface with knees tracking over the feet and the torso under control. Step down between repetitions if repeated depth drops make technique deteriorate.
Fatigue changes the risk-reward balance of explosive work. Stop the set when jump height, landing sound, alignment, or confidence clearly worsens.

Use one rule: if you cannot land quietly and hold the position for a full breath, the repetition does not count as quality work. Lower the box, reduce the repetitions, or switch to a lower-impact power drill.

How box jumps fit a muscle-building plan
Place low-volume, high-quality jumps near the beginning of a session, after warming up and before heavy fatigue. Then use squats, split squats, hinges, calf work, or other progressively loaded movements for the bulk of hypertrophy training.

Who should scale the movement first
People new to jumping can begin with snap-downs, low pogo hops, or small vertical jumps before adding a box. The goal is to learn force absorption and repeatable alignment before height becomes part of the task.
Joint pain, recent injury, poor balance, and a training surface that moves are reasons to choose a lower-impact option. Explosive work is optional, and no muscle-building plan depends on clearing a box.
Older adults and beginners can still train power with appropriately scaled movements. The useful dose is the one that preserves speed and control without creating fear or lingering joint symptoms.
The box is a landing target, not a scorecard for courage.
The bottom line
Plyometric jump training can produce some muscle growth, particularly in less-trained people, but box jumps are best treated as power work. Keep the landings crisp and use progressive resistance training as the more controllable foundation for hypertrophy.
