A complete training program contains seven things: a rule for when to add weight, a planned easier week, coverage of every major movement pattern, some single limb work, a plan for changing exercises, a warm up, and instructions for what to do after a missed week.
Most free programs hand you an exercise list and stop.
The exercise list is the easy part. It also matters least after your first few months.
What follows is an audit, not a plan I want you to buy. Open whatever you are currently following and score it.
A program that fails three or more of these checks is not wrong, but it is unfinished, and you are the person who has to finish it.
Most programs are not wrong. They are incomplete, and the parts that go missing are always the boring ones.
What does a complete program actually contain?
Run each row below against your program before you read the rest of this article.

This table is a WorkoutHealthy planning framework, not an industry standard.
It exists because the same seven gaps show up over and over in programs that otherwise look reasonable.
Does the program tell you when to add weight?
This is the first thing to check and the most common failure.
A progression rule has to be specific enough that two different people reading it on the same day would make the same decision.
“Increase the weight when it feels easy” is not a rule. Neither is “push yourself.”
A real rule names a trigger and a size.
Something like: when you complete every prescribed set at the top of the target, add the smallest available increment next session.
The size of the jump matters as much as the trigger, because most people own dumbbells that jump in five pound steps and then wonder why a lift stalls for a month.
If your program has no rule, write one and put it at the top of the page.
You do not need the perfect rule. You need one you will actually apply on a Tuesday when you feel average.
Is there a lighter week anywhere in the calendar?
Look for a week where the program deliberately asks for less.
If every week is identical or every week is heavier, the plan has no release valve, and your body will eventually take one whether you scheduled it or not.
An international panel of coaches and researchers reached consensus on what deloading means in strength and physique sport, defining it as a period of reduced training stress used to manage fatigue and improve readiness for the training that follows (Bell et al., 2023).
That same panel agreed deloads commonly land every four to six weeks and usually run about seven days, though the length can range from a single session to two weeks.
They also agreed on the levers: fewer reps per set, fewer sets per session, or fewer sessions per week.
Note what is not on that list. Nobody said the deload week is the week you stop training.
Consensus is expert opinion, not a controlled trial, so treat those numbers as a starting shape rather than a law.
The practical version is simple enough to write into any program: every fourth to sixth week, cut your sets roughly in half and keep the movements you already know.

Does it cover every movement pattern, including one limb at a time?
Programs drift toward whatever the author likes doing, and the gaps are usually predictable.
Check your week against the six patterns below.

Then ask the separate question: does anything in the week happen on one leg or with one arm?
Single limb work is worth auditing for a reason that has nothing to do with sport specific carryover claims.
It shows you the side difference that a barbell hides, because a bilateral lift lets a stronger side quietly cover for a weaker one.
You do not need to rebuild your program around it.
One single leg exercise and one single arm exercise per week is enough to make the gap visible.
Be careful about the promises attached to this category.
“Functional” training is sold hard, and the evidence that unilateral or multi directional work transfers to daily tasks better than plain strength training is thinner than the marketing suggests.
Audit for coverage, not for the promise.
A barbell is a generous partner. It lets your strong side carry your weak side for years without either of you mentioning it.
Does anything on the exercise list ever change?
There are two failure modes here, and they look nothing alike.
The first is a list that never changes for a year.
The second is a list that changes every session, which makes progression impossible to track because you never repeat anything long enough to compare.
A complete program says when the list changes and which parts stay fixed.
One study is worth knowing here.
Researchers put physically active men through twelve weeks of matched volume leg training and compared varying the exercises against varying the load scheme (Fonseca et al., 2014).
Muscle growth was similar across the training groups, but the group that kept the load scheme constant and rotated exercises produced the largest strength gains, and groups using several exercises showed more even growth across the different heads of the quadriceps than the squat only group.
That was a small study on one muscle group, so do not read it as proof that rotation beats everything.
Read it as permission to rotate on a schedule instead of on a whim.
A workable default is to hold your main lifts for a training block and rotate the accessory work around them.

Is the warm up written down, or just assumed?
Most programs assume you will warm up and never say how.
An assumed warm up becomes whatever you feel like doing, which on a bad day is five minutes on your phone next to a treadmill.
A written warm up does not need to be elaborate.
A few minutes of easy general movement, then progressively heavier sets of the first exercise, covers most people.
The specific value is in the ramp sets, because they are where you find out what today’s body is willing to do before you load the bar for a working set.
If your program has no warm up section, add three lines to it. That is the whole fix.
What does the program say about a missed week?
This is the item almost nothing addresses, and it is the reason a lot of programs end after seven weeks instead of twelve.
You get sick, or travel, or work explodes, and the plan says nothing about the day you come back.
So people either restart from week one and lose a month of progress, or they walk in and attempt the load they were on before the gap.
Both reactions are worse than the honest answer, which is that a short break costs less than people fear.
In one study, fourteen young men trained the bench press for twenty four weeks.
One group trained continuously and the other alternated six weeks of training with three weeks off, three times through (Ogasawara et al., 2013).
By the end of six months, muscle size and strength gains were similar between the two groups.
That is fourteen people doing one exercise, so it settles nothing about your squat or your whole program.
It is still enough to argue that a week off is a scheduling problem, not a catastrophe.
Write the return rule into your program now, while you are calm.
A reasonable default is to come back at roughly the load you left, cut the sets for the first session or two, and rebuild from there.
How to score the audit and what to fix first
Give your program one point for each of the seven items it genuinely handles in writing.
Six or seven means you have a real program and your job is to follow it.
Four or five means it works for now and will stall in a couple of months at the point where the missing item starts to matter.
Three or fewer means you have an exercise list, and the rest of the program lives in your head where it will not survive a busy month.
Fix them in order. The progression rule first, because without it nothing else has anything to measure.
Then the missed week rule, because that is the one that decides whether you are still training in March.
Then the lighter week, then pattern coverage, then single limb work, then rotation, then the warm up.
None of this requires buying a new program.
Six of the seven fixes are a sentence you add to the top of a page you already have.
