Best Supplements to Stay Fit and Healthy

Whether you’re searching the internet, browsing through your local health food store, or flipping through a fitness magazine, you’re likely to come across hundreds of advertisements from companies that claim to offer the best supplements for your health and fitness. It can be a little overwhelming when you’re trying to decide which ones will best suit you and your own personal needs and goals. There are some however, that everyone can benefit from no matter what they are hoping to accomplish.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are naturally occurring nutrients found in many of the foods we consume and one of the best supplements to add to your diet. Antioxidants are an important part of a healthy diet since they have the capacity to counteract some of the damage done by free radicals. Free radicals are toxic molecules produced by our bodies in response to oxidative stress. They can contribute to the development of some health concerns like certain cancers, heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer’s.

Oxidative stress is unavoidable duet to the fact that we must consume oxygen to sustain life. If you’re a fitness enthusiast, the one downside is that you likely consume more oxygen than that of sedentary folks, meaning antioxidants should be even more important to you.

Antioxidants are naturally found in many foods. Foods rich in Vitamins E and C, along with selenium and beta-carotene will contain the richest sources. Think of brightly colored fruits and vegetables, beans, raw nuts, seafood, lean meats and whole grains.

None of us have a perfect diet all of the time so it never hurts to supplement the diet with alternatives to food when it comes to antioxidants.

Green Tea

Green tea has a high concentration of polyphenols, which is a powerful antioxidant that will fight the destructive properties of free radicals and add a boost to the immune system.

Green tea is an easy, convenient and tasty way to load up on those protective antioxidants. It can easily be added to your day by substituting your morning cup of coffee for a mug of tea, or perhaps enjoying it iced with lemon on a hot summer’s day.

Fish Oils

Fish oils should top your list of supplements due to the extreme richness of antioxidants they offer. Without a doubt, fish oils are one of the best supplements you can buy, by far.

They are rich in Vitamins E, A and D, along with astaxanthin (an antioxidant from the carotenoid family), CoQ10, Selenium and Taurine. All of these nutrients offer exceptional free radical protection along with benefits to nearly every part of our bodies.

Fish oils can be purchased in capsule or liquid form. The capsules are easy to take a couple times a day but for those that have problems keeping large pills down, the liquid form may be more appealing.

Look for quality when purchasing a fish oil. Krill oil, is slightly more expensive, but offers the best quality due to the lower levels of mercury. If you opt for another type, be sure to research the brand in order to make sure it’s a reputable source that follows appropriate filtering guidelines.

To Your Health

With the help of these supplements, along with a quality, daily multivitamin, you’ll be on the fast track to good health. Keep in mind that while one of the best supplements by far is a balanced, nutrient dense diet; quality products have their place as well. Antioxidants can help fill in the blanks and offer a bit of extra protection and we could all use that.
